Wrapped in a Hug
Wrapped in a Hug (WIAH) is our community tie-blanket initiative that creates comfort—and connection—for Cedar Valley youth. Launched in 2021, members made and distributed 200 fleece tie-blankets to Four Oaks, the Boys & Girls Club Teen Center, Allen Child Protection Center, Waterloo East and West High Schools, and Cedar Falls High School, each accompanied by teen mental-health resources to support well-being during a time of heightened stress.
With growing requests from partner agencies, the Junior League of Waterloo–Cedar Falls set a goal to create 500 blankets by the end of 2023—and, with generous donations of funds, fabric, and volunteer time from individuals and community organizations, we surpassed it. That total is 300 more than our inaugural year and reflects the community’s strong embrace of this project.
Looking ahead, we are expanding distribution to Brownstone Youth Services, Bremwood Lutheran Children’s Home, and Expo Alternative High School. Members are adding SMACK cards and a QR code linking to mental-health resources to every blanket, ensuring each one delivers warmth, dignity, and support.
